Early vaccination for toddlers urged

Secretary for the Civil Service Ingrid Yeung urged parents to arrange COVID-19 vaccination for their children as soon as possible given that those aged from six months to three years may receive the Sinovac vaccine from today.   Mrs Yeung visited a kindergarten and child care centre in To Kwa Wan this morning to view the outreach vaccination service for pupils.   It is the first premises having children vaccinated through the outreach service after the minimum age for receiving the vaccine was lowered to six months old.   She then inspected a community vaccination centre (CVC) in Kwun Tong, where about 15 toddlers aged under three received their jab.   Meeting the media after her To Kwa Wan visit, Mrs Yeung said that 150 parents made appointments for their children aged from six months to three years to get the Sinovac jab in the first half hour after the online booking system started to accept vaccination bookings for this age group.   Parents or guardians must accompany the

Mainland study scheme opens

The Mainland University Study Subsidy Scheme 2022/23 is open for applications from Hong Kong students until September 30, the Education Bureau announced today.   Covering 191 designated Mainland institutions, including 129 institutions participating in the 2022/23 Scheme for Admission of Hong Kong Students to Mainland Higher Education Institutions, the scheme benefits most local students with different financial needs who pursue undergraduate studies in the Mainland.   While the scheme is not subject to a quota, applicants may only receive either a means-tested subsidy or a non-means-tested subsidy in the same academic year.   The subsidy is granted on a yearly basis and the subsidised period covers the normal duration of the undergraduate programme pursued by the student concerned in the designated Mainland institution.   Eligible students may enrol online or by post. Growth forecast cut unavoidable: FS

Financial Secretary Paul Chan today said Hong Kong’s economic growth forecast for this year will likely be adjusted downwards, citing the worsening external economic situation arising from the recent interest rate rise.   The US Federal Reserve raised the interest rate by 75 basis points. In Hong Kong, following this upward adjustment in the target range for the US federal funds rate, the Monetary Authority announced that the Base Rate was adjusted upward to 2.75% with immediate effect according to a pre-set formula.   Meeting the media today, Mr Chan said: “The increase in (the) US interest rate, under Hong Kong’s Linked Exchange Rate System, will impact our interest rate. Taxis to quarantine hotels launched

The Government announced that in addition to the enhancement of the existing free point-to-point transport service, it launched a self-paid taxi service today for inbound travellers to take to designated quarantine hotels (DQHs) from Hong Kong International Airport.   It said with an increasing number of people arriving in Hong Kong from overseas, the demand for point-to-point transport services from the airport to DQHs keeps rising.   The Health Bureau requested the operator of the free point-to-point transport service to suitably adjust the coach schedule and routes taking into account the number and distribution of DQHs as well as the number of arrivals.   As the number of DQHs doubled to nearly 70 in the past four months, the number of free designated transport service routes from the airport to DQHs had increased to 18 since early July.   Each route covers three to five hotels and the travelling time of each trip is under two hours.
