Transport trade relief to be extended

The Transport Department today announced that relief measures for the local public transport sector under the sixth round of the Anti-epidemic Fund will be extended to help the sector amidst the difficult operating environment.   It said the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has substantially dampened public transport patronage, posing a significant threat to the sector’s financial and operational sustainability.   In view of this, the Government will extend the five-month fuel subsidy to five franchised bus companies, 11 franchised and licensed ferry operators, Hong Kong Tramways, taxis and public light buses by another three months.   Furthermore, for eligible public transport operators who record a loss this year, the actual regular repair and maintenance costs from July to December will be reimbursed.   Such relief measures will incur an additional expenditure of about $769 million.   The department will notify relevant public transport operators of details of the measures.
